Erie, Pa.—Following a 6-0 win over UPJ on Saturday the Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team is back on the pitch Wednesday to face Cal (PA) on the road under the lights.
The Matchup
The Lakers have dominated Cal since they started playing each other in 1990. The Lakers are 15-1-4 against the Vulcans all time. Mercyhurst has won four of the last five games including the last matchup in 2019 by a score of 4-0.
Season is in Full Swing
The Lakers have played eight games this season and are 1-1 in PSAC West play. After dropping their PSAC West opener to Seton Hill the Lakers defeated UPJ in dominate fashion. Mercyhurst tallied 22 shots, 12 on goal while not allowing the Mountain Cats to tally a shot.
Six different Lakers scored in the win including Ben Friedlander, Nathan Nagucki, Salvador Rang and Tom Barry who each scored their first goal of year.
Mercyhurst has outscored their opponents 25-11 this season while also outshooting them 157-47.
Nevado Elliott leads the team in goals and points as he has six goals and 14 points. Dylan Sumner sits tied for second in goals and second in points. Sydney Warden has three goals this season while Sean Kerrigan also sits at three. 11 different players have scored a goal for the Lakers this season.
Just Getting Started
The Lakers have seen a lot of production from players who are in their first season in a Laker uniform or in their first championship collegiate season. Elliott came to Mercyhurst from Alderson Broaddus and is leading the team in scoring. Sumner and Kerrigan are both in their first championship season while goalkeeper Jonathan Gomes has started in every game and has 12 saves after transferring from UNCW.
Scouting Cal (PA)
The Vulcans take the pitch with an overall record of 1-6-1 and a 1-2 record in PSAC West play. Their only win this season came against UPJ on Sept. 25 by a score of 5-0. Cal has been outscored 21-11 this season and outshot 116-63. Negus Johnson and Zach Vanek each have scored twice this season while Cullin Woytoich leads the team in points with five (1g, 3a). Trevor Zavilowicz has played in every game in the net, he has made 31 saves and has a save percentage of .596.
