Erie, Pa.--On a cool Erie breeze, under the lights, the Lakers Development team fell valiantly in a thriller against Westminster.
The score tied at 0-0 after regulation, the coaches and players unanimously agreed to a PK shootout in which the Titans prevailed.
The game was thrilling; packed with entertainment for the crowd and things almost got off to a great start with
Ali Tobin testing the Titans keeper with a long-range effort. The game picked up speed throughout and both sets of players battled for every ball, on a fast surface and goalkeeper
Kate Costantini had to be alert more than once during the first 30 minutes.
The best chance fell to the Lakers when
Aleea Giese almost diverted a cross from
Maycen Anthony towards the titans goal but the ball skipped up quickly and she narrowly missed the target.
Ali Tobin had a free kick which just sailed over the cross bar with the keeper beaten but neither side could find the back of the net in the first half.
The second half so a more commanding performance from the Lakers and they moved the ball through the thirds much quicker creating more chances than the titans.
Maycen Anthony went close on multiple occasions as did
Amelia Bartolotta and Ashley Ficcorilli. The Titans goalkeeper made some great saves to deny the goal and keep the score level.
Mackenzie Murray produced a near post diving save showing fantastic agility to keep the Lakers with the shutout despite pressure from the opposition.
There was almost a fairytale moment with five seconds remaining, as Captain
Laren Reesman (playing her last collegiate soccer match) found herself in a great position to win the game but the Titans goalkeeper pulled off a wonderful reaction save to deny the senior and onto PK's it went.
Despite the loss on Penalties, the Lakers Reserve team remained unbeaten at home in regulation time. It has been a great season for the Developmental Team and the Coaching staff couldn't be any prouder of all the efforts and growth both on and off the field.
