Men's Hockey Ties RIT in First Road AHA Game

Rochester, N.Y.—The Mercyhurst Men's Hockey skated to a 3-3 tie with the RIT Tigers while RIT picked up the extra point in the shootout.

How it Happened

The Lakers scored first, 10:49 into the first period as Josh McDougall scored his first goal of the season while Jonathan Bendorf picked up an assist on the play and Kyler Head picked up his first point as a Laker.

RIT tied it up with just over five minutes remaining in the opening frame.

The two teams went to the room tied at one, the Lakers were outshot 13-8 in the opening period but were tied after 20 minutes.

RIT scored twice in the final six minutes of the second period to take the lead and make it 3-1 heading into the final frame.

Hank Johnson made 13 saves in the middle frame to keep the Lakers within two goals.

The Lakers made it a one goal game with just under nine minutes into the third period as Paul Maust deflected a Michael Bevilaqua pass into the net to make it 3-2.

With under five minutes remaining in regulation Austin Heidemann scored on pass from Carson Briere to tie the game at three. Dante Sheriff also added to his assists total that was fifth in the nation entering the weekend.

Mercyhurst killed off a penalty with just 26 seconds remaining before Rylee St. Onge drew a penalty to give the Lakers the man advantage as the game headed to overtime.

Heidemann thought he ended the game in the overtime period but was stopped by the RIT goalie who came across his crease to make the save. The Lakers had five shots in overtime while RIT was held to no shots.

In the shootout, RIT scored on their first two attempts while Hedemann and Briere were stopped.

Special Team Battle

RIT scored their first power-play goal of the season as they went 1-4 on the power play. Mercyhurst generated just one shot on their four power plays.

12-6-38 Keep Rolling

Briere has now recorded a point in every game this season after his assist tonight. He has a team-high nine points.

Heidemann has seven points this season and has also recorded a point in each game of the short season.

Sheriff with his assist now has seven assists this season and points in all but one game. He has a total of eight points this season.

Round Two Anyone?

The Lakers and Tigers are set to square off tomorrow again in Rochester with puckdrop slated for 5:05 PM.
