Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team looks to build off their 2-2 draw with Gannon this past weekend as they host Slippery Rock on Wednesday before heading to UPJ on Saturday to take on the Mountain Cats.
The Matchups
The Lakers and Rock have matched up 45 times dating back to 1980. The Lakers have an all-time record of 25-18-2. The two teams last matched up twice in 2019 with the Lakers winning both games by a combined score of 4-0.
Mercyhurst and UPJ have matched up 22 times and have a record of 18-4-0 against the Mountain Cats. The Lakers and Mountain Cats matched up on Oct. 2, Mercyhurst won 6-0 while six different Lakers scored.
Crunch Time
In their last PSAC West match the Lakers picked up a point against Gannon who is Nationally Ranked and had just one loss and no ties entering the game. Tom Barry and Nevado Elliott scored for the Lakers while Sean Kerrigan and Julius Becker each picked up assists.
Prior to the match with Gannon the Lakers played Le Moyne in their final non-conference game of the year. The Lakers took advantage of the Dolphins losing two players to red cards and won by a score of 4-1. Sidney Warden scored twice on penalty kicks while Salvador Rang and Carlos Cueva also scored for the Lakers.
The Lakers have six PSAC West remaining this season.
Constancy in the Cage
Jonathan Gomes has played all but 45 minutes in net for the Lakers. In his first season with the Lakers, he has made 23 saves in net while having a 1.37 goals against average.
Newcomers Lead the Way
Elliott leads the Lakers in goals (seven) in his first season with the Lakers. Dylan Sumner who is in his first championship season is tied with Warden for second on the team in points. Nine players that are either in their first season at Mercyhurst or in their first championship season have scored for Mercyhurst.
Playoff Picture
The top three teams in each division make the playoffs. Gannon sits atop the PSAC West with 13 points while Seton Hill is in second with 12. Slippery Rock has six, Mercyhurst five, Cal four and UPJ has yet to earn a point.
Scouting Slippery Rock
The Rock are 5-5-2 this season and are 2-3 in their last three games with wins over Cal and UPJ. Mo Kanani leads the Rock with five goals and 10 points, Ramses Minaya has four goals and two assists. Hossman Aly has played all but 158 minutes in net for The Rock, he has a record of 4-4-2 and a save percentage of .745.
Scouting UPJ
The Mountain Cats are 1-9-1 this season with their lone win coming against Penn State-New Kensington. UPJ has lost their last six games including five PSAC West games. Alexzander Toto is the leading scorer for the Mountain Cats, he has three goals and one assist. Three different players have played in net for UPJ and have a combined goals against average of 3.53.
