Men's Hockey Lights The Lamp Five Times as they Defeat Holy Cross

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Men's Hockey team picked up their first win of the season as they defeated Holy Cross 5-2.

How it Happened

Holy Cross scored first on Saturday afternoon as they converted on the power play for the fourth time this weekend. The Lakers were down just 12:34 into the game.

Mercyhurst went into the locker room down 1-0 and being outshot 12-7.

7:46 into the middle frame, Noah Kane netted his first goal of the season as he banged home a rebound from Jonathan Bendorf. It was Kane's third career goal as the Lakers tied the game at one.

 

With 3:30 remaining in the middle frame, Marko Reifenberger scored his first goal of the season to give the Lakers the lead. Reifenberger took a drop pass from Josh McDougall and put a wicked wrister past the goalie for Holy Cross.

 

After scoring the go-ahead goal the Lakers went to the locker room up one after outshooting the Crusaders 22-2 in the middle frame.

Just 2:01 into the final period Carson Briere continued his dominate weekend as he scored his fifth goal of the weekend. Austin Heidemann and Micheal Bevilacqua picked up assists on the play.

 

With 53 seconds remaining Rylee St. Onge picked up his first goal of the year on the empty net, Steven Ipri picked up the loan assist.

 

With two seconds remaining the Lakers added another empty netter as Heidemann scored his second of the year, Geoff Kitt and Paul Maust added apples on the play.

 

Mercyhurst outshot the Crusaders 37-22, Hank Johnson made 20 saves in his second game of the year.

Ring the Bell

The Lakers picked up their first win of the season with the win. Mercyhurst also took five of six points in their first Atlantic Hockey weekend of the season.

Briere is Rolling

Briere scored five times this weekend, last weekend he scored twice and added an assist. The Philadelphia native is the only player in the nation to have four goals in a game this season. He also leads the nation in goals per game. He entered the game as the NCAA leader in goals.
