Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Men's Hockey team was back on the ice Sunday evening for an exhibition game against the US National Team Development Program. The Lakers skated to a 7-3 win over the USNTDP.
How it Happened
The USNTDP jumped out to a lead just 8:55 into the opening period.
Mercyhurst scored their first goal of the night in 15:03 into the opening period as Rylee St. Onge scored for the Lakers while Kyler Head picked up an assist.
Just before the end of the opening period, Steven Ipri scored to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. Pierce Crawford and Jake Beaune added assists on the power-play goal. The Lakers were outshooting the USNTDP 12-5.
Two minutes into the middle frame Jonathan Bendorf scored his first goal of the evening, Josh McDougall and Dante Sheriff tallied assists on the
second Laker power-play goal.
The USNTDP got one back just under five minutes later to make it 3-2.
Bendorf was quick to take the two-goal lead back as he scored his second of the night just under a minute after the USNTDP goal. McDougall picked up his second assist of the night while Devon Daniels also added an assist.
The Lakers weren't done in the middle frame, McDougall scored to make it 5-2 with just 1:21 remaining in the middle frame. St. Onge picked up his second point as he added an assist on the play. Mercyhurst went to the room up three and outshooting the USNTDP 26-16.
Just 22 seconds into the final frame St. Onge scored his second of the game as Crawford added his second assist of the game on the goal.
The USNTDP added their third goal 8:12 into the third period to make it a three-goal game one again.
With the USNTDP net empty Bendorf completed the hat-trick as the puck had just enough juice to cross the line after Bendorf cleared the puck from the Laker zone. Beaune tallied his second assist of the game on the goal.
Hank Johnson made the start in net and made eight saves through just over 30 minutes. Kyle McClellan made 10 saves as he played the final 30 minutes of the game.

The Lakers play eight straight Atlantic Hockey games starting with RIT next weekend. Friday's puck drop is slated for 7:05 PM in Rochester. Saturday the Lakers will play at 5:05 PM with the Tigers hosting once again.
