Women's Soccer Announces 2020 Class (Updated as 5/24)

ERIE, Pa. - Coming off an 11-6-2 season and earning a spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament, Head Coach Jonathan Arlet and his staff announced 16 new players that will join the Lakers this fall.  These athletes will represent three states and three countries (United Kingdom, Canada, and the Untied States), so here is the Mercyhurst women's soccer 2020 Class.

"I chose Mercyhurst because I knew it would give me the best chance to succeed both academically as well as athletically." - Alaysia Grose

Grose, a native of Mansfield, Ohio comes to Mercyhurst as a Graduate Transfer after earning her Bachelor's in Anthropology from the University of Toledo.  Before joining the Rockets she was a multi-sport athlete at Mansfield High School where she played soccer and ran track.  In soccer, she was named a captain twice and team MVP three times.  Grose also was chosen to the All-Ohio Cardinal Conference three times. In addition to three First Team All-District honors.  She took home both conference and district championships in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x200m as well. Alaysia will pursue a Master's in Organizational Leadership at Mercyhurst.    

Schumacher, a native of Erie, Pennsylvania comes back home after spending one year at Chatham University in Pittsburgh.  A graduate of Mercyhurst Preparatory School she played soccer for the Lakers, before moving over to ice hockey last year for the Cougars where she tallied three goals on 42 shots.  Rylee will return to soccer and enter the Sports Medicine program at Mercyhurst.

Stone, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania makes the trip north to Erie after spending her last four years at West Allegheny High School where she was a member of the Indians soccer program.  Sammi will join the Physicians Assistant program at Mercyhurst in the Fall.  

Talone, a native of Hilton, New York arrives in Erie to join the Lakers after attending and graduating from Hilton High School.  She helped the Cadets to make an appearance in the Sectional Semifinals as well as taking home All-County Second Team honors in 2017.  Tori's path of study at Mercyhurst remains unclear as she will arrive in the Fall with her major Undecided.

The forward arrives in Erie after playing for the Vikings of Apollo-Ridge High School in Spring Church, Pennsylvania.  Maycen earned four varsity letters during her Vikings career.  She was also a three-time WPIAL All-Section selection as well as a two-time pick on the All-WPIAL team.  Anthony played club for the Kiski Fire.  At Mercyhurst, she will pursue a degree in Sports Medicine with a concentration in Pre-Physician Assistant.

"Mercyhurst is a program that shares my want to achieve the goals that we set both as a team as well as individually, and I just can't wait to get started." - Maddie Elbro

Maddie is the first of two international students in the 2020 class coming to Erie from "across the pond" in Kinver, United Kingdom.  Elbro played club for the Wolverhampton Wanders where she made her Women's First Team debut at the age of just 16.  In her first season with the Wolves she earned the Player of the Season award.  At Mercyhurst, Maddie will look to earn her degree in Sports Medicine, in addition to pushing for time between the sticks for the Lakers.    

Evans, a native of Cambridge, New York will look to continue the role she played at Cambridge Central School where she provided a vital piece of the Indians attack from the forward role.  She was chosen as a team captain and earned NYS Section 2 First Team and All-Star honors two times. Evans was selected to the All-State Fourth Team as well.  Vanessa aided her club team Capital United in two EDP Conference Premier I Division titles.  At Mercyhurst, she will be looking to hear her degree in Health Science.

Godlewski is one of two Villa Maria Academy midfielders that will join the Lakers in 2020. The Erie native helped the Victors to four regional titles and three District 10 championships.  She also aided the team in reaching the PIAA 2A State Final in 2019, where they came up just short to Lansdale Catholic.  Individually, Godlewski was earned three All-Region selections and was named All-District twice.  She played club for MSA. At Mercyhurst, Abi will pursue her degree in Early Childhood/Special Education.

Kalina, a native of Canfield, Ohio comes to Erie after playing midfield for the Canfield High School Cardinals.  She was a four-year varsity member and was named a team captain in 2019.  Kalina helped the Cardinals to two district titles and one regional final. Individually, she was a three time All-Conference, All-County, and All-District selection. Played club soccer for both Soccer Vision Academy and Pennine United.  Over the next four years she will go after a degree in Communications.

Kowal comes to  Mercyhurst from right up I-90 in Buffalo, New York where she helped man the back line for Lancaster Central High School.  She and her Lady Legends teammates worked together to capture the 2019 Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division title.  Reilly also played club soccer for GPS Buffalo.  As a Laker, she will pursue a degree in Criminal Justice.  

Lewis a defender from Randolph, New York attended Randolph Central High School. She was a four-year member of the Cardinals side and earned two First Team All-Star selections.  At Mercyhurst, her chosen path of study will be Exercise Science.

Low is the a Ohio native and the second goalkeeper of this class.  While playing at Walsh Jesuit High School she helped the team to three North Coast League titles and three Ohio District championships. Low was also a member of the Warriors team that won an Ohio Regional and State Championship.  Currently, she is playing club for Internationals SC.  At Mercyhurst, Low will go in search of a Biology degree with a Pre-Physical Therapy minor.    

Mijares comes to Mercyhurst from north of the border in Brooklin, Canada.  The midfielder racked up 34 goals and was the Top Scorer in the Ontario Player Development League.  At Father Leo J Austin CSS she was named Athlete of the Year and selected as a two-time Most Valuable Player for her high school team in 2017 and 2018.  Emily aided the Wildcats in winning two Lake Ontario Secondary School Association titles as well as the league championship in 2018. She currently plays club for FC Durham Academy.  Mijares will enroll in the Exercise Science program when she arrives in Erie in the Fall.

Parker is a forward that will arrive in Erie by way of Brockport, New York.  While playing for Brockport High School she earned All-State team honors in 2019. Emily currently is playing club for Empire United.  At Mercyhurst, Parker will pursue her degree in Chemistry.  

Poleski is the second Apollo, Pennsylvania native to join the Lakers. As a defender at Kiski Area High School she earned All-Section and All-WPIAL honors in 2019.  Alyssa is playing club for the Kiski Fire and the Kiski Area Girls Varsity team where she was named the Team MVP in 2019.  At Mercyhurst, Poleski will look to achieve her degree in Graphic Design.

Schoonover is the second Villa Maria Academy midfielder to join the Lakers in 2020. The Erie, Pennsylvania native was named the Victors Offensive MVP and team captain in 2019.  She will join fellow Victors teammate Abigail Godlewski in the Lakers Green and Blue in the fall.  Isabelle has been playing club soccer for the Cleveland Soccer Academy and the Erie Admirals.  At Mercyhurst, Schoonover will pursue a degree in Forensics and Psychology.  

Our 2020 class collectively is a technical and extremely tough group of players. They will not only compliment the strengths of our returners on the pitch, but are very driven in the classroom and want to work just as hard there. We are proud to have each of these ladies join us in the Fall.
