Lakers Face #3 Tampa in Opening Round of the DII College World Series on Sunday

CARY, N.C.—The Mercyhurst baseball team will open up its first game of the Division II College World Series against the University of Tampa.  The game will be on Sunday, June 2nd at 7:00 PM.

  • This is the Lakers second straight year making it to the National Tournament in Cary, NC after defeating Charleston (WV) in the Super Regional
  • In the Super Regional, the Lakers dropped the first game but bounced back and took the second two games to advance back to the Division II College World Series

Leading the Lakers into Cary
  • Alex O'Donnell leads the Lakers in to the National tournament with a batting average of .313 and 51 hits
  • Domenic DeRenzo leads the team with 37 RBI, 29 extra base hits and 10 home runs
  • On the mound the pitching duo of Matthew Minnick and Tyler Garbee lead the green and blue
    • Minnick leads with an ERA of 2.77, 122 strike outs with 68.1 innings pitched and  a record of 6-3
    • Tyler Garbee has a team best, 8-2 record with an ERA of 2.89, 97 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .172
 
Scouting the Spartans:
  • Tampa enters the College World Series as the #3 team in the country with a record of 41-14
  • UT advanced to the CWS after defeating #5 Delta State in two straight games in the South Super Regional
  • Yorvis Torrealba leads the charge for the Spartans, batting a .401 with 79 hits, 27 extra base hits, 41 RBI and 11 homeruns
  • On the mound, Mason Duke leads Tampa with an ERA of 2.53 on 16 appearances and a 9-0 record.  Duke has pitched 96 innings with 76 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .268
Previous Meeting
  • The Lakers matched up with Tampa in the 2015 National tournament for the first time ever
  • UT prevailed with a 3-1 victory and currently leads the all-time series 1-0
