Baseball Set to Host Charleston (WV) in Atlantic Super Regional

ERIE, Pa.—The Mercyhurst baseball team is ready to host the first year of Super Regionals at the Division II level against Charleston (WV) in a best of three series, starting Friday. The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the College World Series in Cary, North Carolina.
 
Super Regional Schedule
  • Game One: Friday, May 24th - 1:00 PM
  • Game Two:  Saturday, May 25th - 11:00 AM
  • Game Three: Saturday, May 25th - 3:30 PM (If Necessary)

Leading the Lakers:

  • After winning the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional I over Bloomsburg 11-0, MU will have the opportunity to host the first ever DII Super Regional
  • The Lakers didn't have a great start to the post season, going two and out in the PSAC Tournament but were granted the 5th seed in the NCAA Atlantic Regional
  • From there, Mercyhurst defeated Bloomsburg (4) 9-8 (18 innings) and then beat host, Millersville (1) 2-0 before beating Bloomsburg to take the Atlantic Region I title
  • This would be back to back Atlantic Region Championships for the Lakers
  • Alex O'Donnell leads the Lakers in batting average (.311), hits (47), and is tied with Domenic DeRenzo for RBI (33) while DeRenzo leads MU in homeruns (10)
  • Matthew Minnick commands the rubber for the green and blue with an ERA of 2.14 with 116 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched with an opponent batting average of .183


Scouting Charleston:
  • Charleston entered the NCAA Atlantic Regional as the sixth and final seed after receiving an automatic bid winning its conference tournament (MEC)
  • The Golden Eagles advanced to the Super Regional after defeating Gannon in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region II Championship 6-1 staying undefeated in post season play (7-0) with a 40-17 record
  • Soaring for the maroon and gold into supers is Colby Johnson, with a batting average of .356, 10 homeruns and 55 RBI
