Mercyhurst Sweeps UPJ on Sunday Going 3-1 on the Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa.—Mercyhurst baseball closes out the conference opener against Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday, taking both games in the doubleheader.
 
Game One: (W, 7-3)
 
The Lakers won the first game, 7-3.  Jack Elliott led the team with two hits and had an RBI. Josh Suroowiec led the team with 2 RBI.

Tyler Garbee got the win in the first game, going five innings with eight strikeouts, one earned run and allowed five hits.

For UPJ, Smith led the team with two hits.  Roxby received the loss pitching three innings allowing four earned runs, three hits and recorded three strikeouts.

In the first, the Mountain Cats struck first off a Thompson single scoring Pasone. MU would respond to their one run with four of their own with the first coming with a walk by Dom Cecere scoring Elliott. Matthew Schneider would score off a bases loaded balk and the final two runs would be off a Surowiec single scoring two.

In the 2nd UPJ would cut the deficit to one (4-3), off of one hit and three errors by the Lakers.

MU would be held scoreless in the second but would make up for it in the third scoring two runs on off errors by UPJ as well.

In the top of the 5th, Garbee was able to get MU would of a bases loaded jam striking out the side to keep the score 6-3 Lakers.
Mercyhurst would score one more in the home half of the inning when Elliot doubled scoring Surowiec.

Lucas Folmar came for the final two innings of the game and would strikeout every batter he faced to close out the game 7-3.

Game Two (W, 5-4)

Mercyhurst (11-3, 3-1), would take the second game 5-4. Dom DeRenzo, Jack Elliott, Matthew Schneider, Hunter Snyder and Dom Cecere would all record one hit each for the Lakers for the total of its five in game two. Jack Elliott led the team with RBI with a homerun.

Russell Lamovec earned the win going five innings, allowing one earned run and striking out eight.
For Pitt-Johnstown (13-9, 1-3), Shirk led the team with two hits.  Colledge got the loss in game two, allowing four earned runs, five hits and struck out eight.

The game remained scoreless until UPJ put the first run on the board after a Shirk single down the line scoring Pasone.

MU caming roaring back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning off the Jack Elliott homer scoring DeRenzo and Chambers. In the fifth, DeRenzo would score on an error while later in the inning, Snyder singled up the middle scoring Schneider making it 5-2. 

In the top of the 7th, UPJ would try to  mount a comeback but would fall short when Alex O'Donnell would throw the tying run out at home to give the Lakers their second win on the day, 5-4.
 
Next Up: Mercyhurst will travel to California (Pa.) in another PSAC weekend series, starting on March 29th.
