Devin Pipher had a seven-point game, totaling three goals and four assists, as the 10th-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team opened its season with a 14-8 non-conference victory over No. 17 Wingate on Saturday.
Benjamin Smith-Wilcox added three goals while
Nicholas Bartone and
Dom Perna contributed two goals apiece for the Lakers (1-0).
Sam Crusha,
Nathan Grenon,
Nicholas Mabe and
Dan Kritkausky also had goals for MU.
Jarrett Cook and
Caleb Kueber made two assists apiece while single assists were credited to Crusha, Grenon and
Haden Bates.
Evan Schumacher led the team in groundballs with four while
Brandon May caused two turnovers.
Winning goalie
Hunter Emerson totaled nine saves.
The Lakers took a 4-1 lead through one quarter before the host Bulldogs evened the score at 4-all. Then, a goal by Perna gave Mercyhurst a 5-4 hafltime lead.
Mercyhurst ran off four consecutive goals to begin the second half and, after Wingate pulled within 9-6, the visitors went on another 4-0 streak to put the game out of reach.
The Lakers will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 23, with a 12 p.m. contest at sixth-ranked Limestone.
