Volleyball Looks to Get Back on Track at Home on Tuesday

ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst volleyball team will look to end of rough stretch of results as they welcome the Fighting Scots of Edinboro University on Tuesday evening to the Mercyhurst Athletic Center for Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action beginning at 7pm.

Scouting the Lakers:
Mercyhurst comes in to the match sitting at 13-9 and 5-6 in PSAC action, dropping their last four contests to Shepherd, Shippensburg, Gannon, and Clarion with three of them coming away from the Athletic Center.  On Saturday, they dropped a 3-0 decision to the visiting Golden Eagles of Clarion.  In that match, seniors Alyssa Zirnheld and Katie Baird led the attack combining for 16 kills, which was paced by nine from Zirnheld.  Claire Kenny had a good afternoon with 17 assists and ten digs, while libero Hannah Vuylsteke recorded a team-high 14 digs.  Leah Kern and Madison Kasper had seven blocks between them.  On the season, the Lakers are posting a .189 attack percentage holding the opposition to .164.  Mercyhurst on average puts down a dozen kills per set.  Baird leads the side in that category 249.  

Scouting the Fighing Scots:
Edinboro is 12-10 overall, buts holds a one-game lead on the Lakers for the last playoff spot with a mark of 6-5 in conference.  They are coming off a pair of 3-0 shutouts over the weekend over Slippery Rock and Clarion.  As a team they hold a .203 attack percentage allowing their opponents to hit .161.  They rack up 12.2 kills per set thanks to 10.8 assists.  At the other end of the court they total 14.4 digs per frame and record 1.7 blocks each set.  Cierah Jackson and Bella Burrelli lead the offense as both of them have recorded over 200 kills with Jackson leading the way with 276 averaging 3.63 per set.  On the service line Alicia Eldredge, Jackson, and Burrelli have totaled 106 aces paced by 37 each from Eldredge and Burrelli.  Defensively, Molly Breier and Burrelli are responsible for a majority of digs accounting for 489 between the two of them with Breier racking up 287.  At the net, Erica Sharp has a team-high 63 blocks, while Morris Page has tacked on 47.  Missy Soboleski is in her 14th season at the helm of Edinboro.     

Series History:
Edinboro holds an 11-8 lead in the series.  The Fighting Scots took last season's match on November 2, 2018 defeating the Lakers in five by scores of 25-18, 25-15, 16-25, 25-27, and 15-11.  In that match Zirnheld and Baird combined for 30 kills, while Marusza doled out 46 helpers to go along with 26 digs by Vuylsteke.

Waiting in the Water:
Mercyhurst will wrap up the 2019 home portion of the schedule this weekend with games against California (Pa) on Friday, before squaring off with Seton Hill two days later on Sunday.
