Volleyball Comes Up Short in Four Sets Against New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Mercyhurst (7-14, 3-6 NEC) lost the match to New Haven (10-13, 6-3 NEC) 3-1 on Thursday, with set scores of 25-22, 22-25, 17-25 and 26-28. The Lakers finished with 52 kills and hit .240, but New Haven held a 10-4 advantage in service aces and a 69.0-63.0 edge in points.

The Lakers answered a 22-22 tie by scoring the final three points, with Roslyn Guerra putting down all three kills to finish a 25-22 first-set win. Earlier, the Lakers fell behind 5-0 before turning Anna Logan's service turn into a 5-5 tie, getting two Madison Miner kills, a Julia Shepherd kill and a block by Ava Carney and Miner during the push. The set stayed tight through the middle, with the Lakers moving ahead 12-11 on Guerra's kill and an Alyssa Krause ace before New Haven later went back in front 18-16. Mercyhurst responded with kills from Miner and Payton Melin to even the set, then used a Miner kill, Miner service ace and a New Haven error to build a 22-19 lead before closing after New Haven tied it again.

The Lakers pushed New Haven into a late back-and-forth second set, rallying from a 19-17 deficit to take a 20-19 lead on a Carney kill, Roslyn Guerra's block on a Lauren MacKellar attack and a New Haven attack error. Earlier, Carney opened the set with a kill from Krause, and the Lakers built an 8-5 edge behind kills from Anna Logan, Miner, Melin and Guerra. New Haven answered with a run to move in front 10-9, but the Lakers continued to trade points through the middle of the set as Miner, Logan and Guerra kept the score tight. After Mercyhurst went ahead 20-19, New Haven scored three straight points, and although Guerra and Shepherd added late kills to keep the Lakers within one at 23-22, New Haven closed the set 25-22.

The Lakers spent the third set chasing after New Haven moved ahead 13-4, with their early scoring coming on opponent errors and a Mia Mattingly kill from Mya Comer. The Lakers found small responses from the service line, including Krause serving during a New Haven setting error and a Carney kill that made it 14-8. After falling behind 18-9, Miner put down a kill and Sydney Forcht followed with a service ace as the Lakers cut the margin to 18-12. The Lakers made their strongest late push from 21-13 to 21-17 behind a Logan kill, a Sarah Barnum-Mattingly block and a Guerra kill, but New Haven won the final four points to take the set 25-17.

The Lakers built a 22-17 lead in the fourth set before New Haven came back to take the set 28-26. Earlier, the Lakers fell behind 7-3 but worked back with kills from Carney, Miner and Guerra, plus a Comer service ace. Down 14-12, the Lakers tied the set on kills by Mattingly and Melin, then moved ahead 16-14 with help from a Mattingly-Melin block. Guerra added kills that pushed Mercyhurst to 18-15, 19-16 and 20-17, and a Carney-Erin Robbins block helped extend the lead before New Haven rallied to tie the set at 23-23. The Lakers reached set point at 24-23 and later answered with a Miner kill to tie it at 25-25, but New Haven scored the final two points after a 26-26 tie to finish the set.
