Football Takes on Cal U in PSAC West Action

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst football team travels to California, Pa. to take on the Vulcans in a PSAC West contest slated for 1 p.m. at Adamson Stadium.

All-Purpose Back: Garrett Owens lead the Lakers rushing attack with 433 yards and 10 touchdowns after a pair of scores last weekend. He also has a team-high 21 catches for 223 yards and two scores. The Lakers are 2-0 in 2019 and 7-1 all-time when Owens surpasses 100 yards rushing.

Backfield Production: Mercyhurst has targeted their backs out in the passing game with four different backs catching at least 13 passes. Jason Armstrong has hauled in 13 passes including a team-leading four touchdowns.

Records were Meant to be Broken: Senior quarterback Doug Altavilla now holds both the Mercyhurst all-time passing and total offense records. Altavilla passed Matt Kissell to take the top spot on both lists. Altavilla became the first Laker ever to surpass 7,000 yards passing.

Sudden Change: The Lakers have forced 13 turnovers through seven games. Joe Scro has intercepted a pair of passes and taken them to the house in back-to-back weeks against Slippery Rock and Edinboro. Scro also returned a fumble 55-yards and was tackled inside the 10 against IUP. Jon LoChiatto also has a pair of interceptions for the Lakers.
Spreading the Ball: For the sixth straight contest at least six different receivers caught passes against Seton Hill last Saturday. 

Playing Behind the Line: The Mercyhurst front seven has consistently played behind the offensive line of scrimmage. Ayron Thompson has recorded 10.5 tackels for loss leading a Laker defense that has 44 stops behind the line for the season. 

Scouting the Vulcans: Cal U enters the contest with a 5-2 overall record and a 3-1 mark in PSAC play. The Vulcans average 37.7 points per game while allowing 16.1. Nelson Brown leads the rushing attack with 606 yards and six touchdowns. Noah Mitchell has posted 1774 yards through the air with 19 scores and six interceptions.Tyson Hill, Jordan Dandridge and Derrick Caraway have combined for 16 receiving touchdowns. Julian Cox leads the Vulcan defense with 42 tackles. Gerald Brown has recorded 10 tackles for loss and six sacks.
