BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Mercyhurst lost to WKU 52-7 on Saturday. The Lakers' points came on a 10-play, 89-yard third-quarter touchdown drive after WKU had built a 45-0 lead.
The Lakers spent the first quarter trying to answer WKU's early passing score after the Hilltoppers went ahead 7-0 on a 72-yard touchdown at 11:41. The Lakers' best offensive series followed, with
Jameir Gamble running for seven and 14 yards and
Alex Gevaudan completing a three-yard pass to
Evan Van Dyke for a first down before the drive stalled at the Lakers' 43.
Thomas O'Neill helped flip field position with punts of 49 and 55 yards, including two placed inside the 20, while the defense later limited a WKU red-zone possession to a 35-yard field goal after
Braylon Beckwith dropped Rodney Tisdale Jr. for a seven-yard loss. WKU held a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Lakers were held scoreless in the second quarter while WKU scored touchdowns on its first three drives, pushing the margin to 31-0 by the end of the second quarter. After WKU's opening touchdown,
Shakile Ferguson returned the kickoff 15 yards, and Gevaudan hit
Amare Lattimore for 10 yards, but the Lakers' drive stalled before O'Neill pinned WKU at its 15 with a 58-yard punt. The defense had stops for loss from
Zacchaeus Dixon and
Mark Hawkins Jr., and
Patrick Carter added a quarterback hurry, but WKU still put together scoring drives of 85 and 46 yards later in the quarter. The Lakers' best offensive sequence came after a fair catch at its 25, when Gevaudan converted third-and-7 with a 13-yard pass to
Christian MacDonald before the drive ended on downs near midfield. The Lakers' finished the quarter with one first down, 31 passing yards and two punts, and WKU took the 31-0 lead into halftime.
The Lakers' most productive stretch of the third quarter came after WKU moved ahead 45-0, as Gevaudan directed a 10-play, 89-yard drive and found Shalik Hampton for a 10-yard touchdown with 1:49 left before
Rocco Marcantonio's extra point made it 45-7. Earlier, WKU scored touchdowns on its first two possessions of the quarter, and the Lakers' first series ended after three plays despite a short completion from Gevaudan to
Evan Van Dyke and a 49-yard punt by O'Neill. On the scoring drive, Gevaudan connected with
Emanuel Fincher for 29 yards from the Lakers' 11, added first-down throws to
Evan Van Dyke and
Ethen Knox, and converted third-and-7 with a 12-yard completion to Lattimore before the touchdown to Hampton. The Lakers' defense got the ball back quickly after the kickoff when
Adonis Marshall forced and recovered a fumble at the Lakers' 28 with 1:03 remaining, and the quarter ended with WKU ahead 45-7.
The Lakers controlled possession for much of the fourth quarter but could not turn two extended drives into points, finishing the quarter with 10:54 of possession and six first downs. The Lakers' opened the quarter by converting fourth-and-five on Knox's seven-yard run off a fake punt, then reached the WKU 11 after Gamble's 35-yard rush before turning it over on downs. WKU answered with a 72-yard touchdown pass and extra point that pushed the score to 52-7 with 11:01 left. The Lakers responded with a 17-play drive from their own 21, converting three third downs and a fourth-and-10 on Gevaudan's 11-yard completion to
Dylan Evans at the WKU 48, but the possession ended on downs at the WKU 40. WKU then used the final 3:20 to close out the game, and the Lakers fell 52-7.
Gevaudan completed 22 of 44 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown. Hampton caught a 10-yard touchdown pass. Marshall recorded four tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.
Mark Hawkins Jr. finished with six tackles and one sack.
