Weyl Wins Third Straight Conference DPOY Award, Highlights All-G-MAC Honorees

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Senior men's lacrosse player Greg Weyl was named Great Midwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and freshman Devin Pipher was recognized as the G-MAC Freshman of the Year, as announced by the league on Thursday.

The accolade marks Weyl's third straight year in which he won a conference DPOY award. He was the G-MAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2016.

Weyl was the only Laker named to the All-G-MAC First Team in 2018 while Colin Greenway, Nathan Grenon and Joseph Plaskey were voted to the Second Team. Honorable mentions included Pipher, Will Agate, Sam Crusha, Oran Horn, Brandon May, Dom Perna, Evan Schumacher and Alec Starr.

Weyl is a three-time conference First Team player, having been named by the G-MAC in 2017 and ECAC in 2016. The two-time All-American, who was Second Team last year and First Team two years ago, was an All-ECAC Second Team and ECAC All-Rookie Team player in 2015.

Weyl, of Pittsford, N.Y., currently leads the Lakers in caused turnovers (40) while rating second on the team in groundballs (51). He has two goals and one assist.

A newcomer from Oshawa, Ont., Pipher was selected as the league's top freshman, having compiled 19 goals and 15 assists for 34 points. He ranks second on the MU roster in assists and points and third in goals. He is also third with 28 groundballs.

Greenway, an attackman from Wiliamsville, N.Y., is the team leader in points (43) and assists (23) in 2018 while ranking second in goals (20).

Grenon is a midfielder from Stittsville, Ont. He has 17 goals and seven assists for 24 points. He ranks fourth on the team in points and fifth in goals.

Plaskey, a defender from Beverly Hills, Mich., is second on the roster in caused turnovers (14). He also has 22 groundballs and one assist.

Pipher was the only attackman among the honorable mentions. Four midfielders were recognized: Crusha, Horn, Perna and Schumacher. Agate and May are defenders and Starr is a goalie.

Horn is the team leader in goals, totaling 26 while ranking third on the squad with 31 points.

Crusha is fourth on the team in goals (18) and fifth in points (21).

Perna has 11 goals, seven assists and 26 groundballs. His GB total has him ranked fourth on the team.

Agate has 12 groundballs and five caused turnovers.

May, who was All-GMAC Second Team in 2017 and ECAC All-Rookie Team, has 23 groundballs and 11 CTs as a junior. He ranks third on the team in caused turnovers.

Schumacher is a faceoff specialist for the Lakers, winning 148 of 253 draws for a .585 percentage. He also has two goals and three assists.

Starr has a 9-3 record in the cage, 6.62 goals-against average and .540 saver percentage.
