ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team claimed its 13th consecutive victory, earning a 9-0 decision over non-conference opponent Ashland on Thursday.
The Lakers, who are ranked second in the Atlantic Region, jumped ahead with three doubles points before entering singles action. The team victory was clinched when
Athina Tsagkaraki finished off her win in the No. 6 singles match.
Tsagkaraki and her doubles teammate,
Ivona Plecevic, got Mercyhurst on the board with an 8-0 sweep of Elizabeth Kidd and Chelsea Myers in the No. 3 doubles match.
The Lakers' No. 1 doubles squad of
Adrianna Jeffress and
Kayla Frost, which is ranked sixth in the Atlantic, tacked on an 8-3 win over Camille Ringot and Anna Hart. Then, at second doubles,
Saioa Gomez de Segura and
Adina Spahalic, who are rated fourth in the Atlantic, teamed for an 8-6 triumph against Natalie Keron and Hazuki Ogino.
Mercyhurst pushed its way through singles play as Spahalic and Tsagkaraki locked up the win. Spahalic won at No. 5 singles over Kidd, 6-0, 6-2, and set the stage for Tsagkaraki's 6-1, 6-1, victory against Myers.
Laker points were earned, in order, by Plecevic, Frost, Gomez de Segura and Jeffress.
Plecevic bested Keron, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles; Frost, ranked second in the Atlantic, defeated Hart at second singles, 6-0, 6-3; Gomez de Segura, ranked 12th in NCAA Division II and No. 1 in the Atlantic, defeated Ringot, 6-2, 6-2, at first singles; and Jeffress, rated third in the Atlantic, handled Ogino, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
Gomez de Segura and Frost extended individual wins streaks to 12 matches each. Spahalic and Tsagkaraki are on 11-match win streaks and Plecevic has won eight in a row. Singles records for each player are as follows: Gomez de Segura (26-2), Frost (20-3), Jeffress (21-3), Plecevic (17-4), Spahalic (14-2) and Tsagkaraki (14-4).
Gomez de Segura and Spahalic teamed for their 16th consecutive doubles win; they are 19-1 in their last 20 matches. Frost and Jeffress combined for their eighth straight win in pairs action. Plecevic and Tsagkaraki are 6-1 in their last seven matches together.
The Lakers (13-0) will be in action again on Friday when they open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play with a visit to Seton Hill.
