Box Score WILSON, N.C. – The Mercyhurst baseball team saw its comeback bid fall just short in a 7-6 loss to Kutztown Saturday afternoon at Fleming Field.
The loss is the third-straight for the Lakers (6-3) while Kutztown picks up its third win of the season (3-3).
Mercyhurst fell behind early after the Golden Bears scored five runs in the first two innings.
The Lakers put together a rally in the fifth inning to pull themselves back within two.
Drew Delsignore hit into a fielder's choice to score
Jimmy Standohar to get Mercyhurst on the board.
Matthew Schneider followed up with an RBI-single scoring
Alex O'Donnell.
Jared Kapturasky brought in another run via another fielder's choice to make the score 5-3.
Kutztown tacked on one more run in the six inning, but the Lakers got it right back in the bottom half on an O'Donnell RBI base knock.
KU tacked on what would end up being a critical insurance run in the top of the eighth to pull ahead by three. The extra run proved big because
Collin Fantaskey hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull the score to the eventual 7-6 final.
O'Donnell finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Standohar and Fantaskey were the only other two Lakers with multiple hits (2).
Russell Lamovec picked up his first loss of the season after allowing three earned runs and walking five in just 2.1 innings.
Hunter Treece followed with 3.2 innings of relief, giving up just one run.
Mercyhurst has announced the cancellation of tomorrow's game in Wilson against Lock Haven due to current and preemptive weather conditions, thus concluding their N.C. trip. The Lakers take the field against this coming Tuesday, March 13 at Wild Things Park in Washington, Pa. versus Alderson Broaddus at a time to be determined.
