KUTZTOWN, PA – The Mercyhurst Lakers had a convincing victory over the Golden Bears today, beating the home team 7-2 on this windy Saturday.
The Lakers won 2 out of their 3 doubles matches, taking a 2-1 lead going into singles action. Continuing to win 5 of 6 singles matches, the team finished the day with a 7-2 victory.
Action started with doubles, in which
Nenad Terzic and
Cormac McCooey were the first to finish, sweeping Perez and Munoz 8-0. Connor McCooey and
Joaquin Aguilera claimed victory as well with a score of 8-4.
Arseniy Sklyarov and
Sebastian Pardo lost the sole doubles point to Kodinov and Nogara 8-6, losing to the same team they had beaten in the PSAC tournament back in the fall of 2016.
Singles went smoothly for the Lakers with only one loss coming from Aguilera in a close 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 battle against Munoz. Terzic was first to finish and claimed the 6-1, 6-1 win over Kodinov, he was followed by his doubles partner
Cormac McCooey who won 6-2, 6-4 over Perez. Sklyarov won 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the match and push the Lakers past the Golden Bears at 5-1.
Dusan Cerny won his first singles match of the season, with a confident 6-4, 6-3 over the #6 Kelly of Kutztown. Last win of the day came off the racket of
Conor McCooey, consolidating the 7-2 finish with a straight sets 6-1, 6-3 victory against Souza.
The men's team now drives down to play Bloomsburg University on Sunday.
