BLUEFIELD, W. Va. -- The Mercyhurst men's tennis team finished off a 5-4 victory over Edinboro at the NCAA Atlantic Regional before falling to host Bluefield State, 5-1, on Sunday.
The day began with the Lakers involved in a 4-4 tie with Edinboro in a match that began Saturday.
Conor McCooey entered Sunday with a 7-5, 5-7, 3-0 advantage against against Kevin Mboko before finishing off a 6-0 third-set victory at No. 5 singles and clinching the win over the Fighting Scots.
Later in the day, Mercyhurst met with a formidable BSU opponent and took 1 of 3 doubles points.
Nenad Terzic and
Cormac McCooey gave the Lakers a brief 1-0 lead, taking an 8-3 win over Giorgi Datashvili and Luca Ockernahl at No. 1 doubles.
BSU responded with the next two doubles points -- and then three straight singles points -- to clinch the victory.
At second doubles, Bluefield's Platon Gud and Ignacio Pulido edged MU's
Conor McCooey and
Joaquin Aguilera, 8-6. The third doubles match ended in favor of BSU's Anthony Braem and Alexandr Rudenco, who defeated Mercyhust's
Sebastian Pardo and
Arseniy Sklyarov.
Singles wins for Bluefield State were recorded by Rudenco, Datashvili and Ockernahl at Nos. 3, 4 and 6, respectively.
