Lakers Win Streak Up To 12 After Two Friday Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLARION, Pa. – The Mercyhurst baseball team won both games of its road doubleheader against Clarion on Friday, April 14. The Lakers (25-2, 14-1) won game one 16-0 followed by a 6-2 win in game two.
 
Recaps for both games are below.
 
Game 1: Mercyhurst 16, Clarion 0
The Laker lineup piled on runs in the first and fifth innings and Russell Lamovec threw six shutout innings as the Lakers won in a 16-run rout in game one.
 
Mercyhurst lineup scored six runs in the first inning to take an immediate lead. Dan Popio hit his second home run of the year and Chris Gonzalez, Matthew Schneider, and Sabatino DiNardo III also drove in runs in the frame.
 
In the eight-run top of the fifth, Cameron Balego launched two home runs, one solo and one grand slam, to up his home run total to a team-high nine on the season. He finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs.
 
Jimmy Latona had two doubles and went 3-for-4. DiNardo and Popio were the other Lakers with multiple hits at two apiece.
 
Lamovec allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter while fanning five Clarion hitters to improve to 5-0 on the season. Nick Kiener threw a scoreless seventh inning to finish the game.
 
Game 2: Mercyhurst 6, Clarion 2
Despite being outhit 7-4 by Clarion, Mercyhurst took game two thanks to a five-run seventh inning.
 
Matthew Keating worked four innings for the Lakers in his start, allowing four hits and one run with three strikeouts. Jamie Lauria closed the game with 2.2 innings pitched, one hit, and one run to go with three strikeouts of his own.
 
The game was tied 1-1 entering the seventh inning before Mercyhurst broke the game open. Popio ripped an RBI-double to get the rally started. After a walk and a sacrifice fly, Drew Delsignore added a two-run double to put Mercyhurst ahead 6-1.
 
Delsignore was the only Laker with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.
 
Mercyhurst returns home tomorrow, April 15, to take on Clarion at 1 p.m. in another doubleheader.
