EDINBORO, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's tennis team suffered a 5-4 loss to Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Wednesday. The matchup decided the PSAC regular-season championship between teams ranked in the latest ITA Atlantic Region ratings (Edinboro, No. 5; Mercyhurst, No. 7).
After the Lakers won 2 of 3 doubles matches, the host Fighting Scots took 4 of 6 doubles points, winning a pair of matches in three sets. The match-clincher -- at No. 2 singles -- was decided in a third-set tiebreaker as Daniel Fernandez finished the EUP win with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) win against Mercyhurst's
Joaquin Aguilera.
At No. 1 singles, a pair of regionally-ranked competitors matched up as Edinboro's Vitor Albanese, ranked first in the Atlantic, edged Mercyhurst's
Nenad Terzic, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
The third singles match also featured regionally-ranked players as EUP's Mauricio Santos (No. 14 Atlantic) defeated MU's
Cormac McCooey (No. 15 Atlantic), 6-3, 6-1.
Conor McCooey and
Arseniy Sklyarov were singles winners for the Lakers at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Conor McCooey defeated Kevin Mboko, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, while Sklyarov bested Thomas McCoy, 6-2, 6-2. Sklyarov's point gave MU its final lead of the match at 3-2 before EUP took 3 of 4.
Victorious doubles teams for Mercyhurst were the No. 1 and No. 3 duos. At No. 1, Terzic and
Cormac McCooey (No. 1 Atlantic) handled Albanese and Mateus Santos (No. 6 Atlantic), 8-5. Aguilera and
Conor McCooey won the third doubles match against Mauricio Santos and Alexander Anderson, 8-2.
