OLEAN, N.Y. -- The Mercyhurst men's tennis team defeated NCAA Division I opponent Saint Bonaventure, 5-2, in a non-conference matchup on Friday. For the Lakers, it was the program's first win over SBU in program history; MU had lost its previous three matches against the Bonnies.
The Lakers took the lone doubles point per D-I rules as they won 2 of 3 pairs matches. Mercyhurst then won 4 of 6 singles matchups, clinching the contest when
Conor McCooey won at fifth singles to claim his 99th collegiate victory (both singles and doubles).
The top-ranked doubles team in the D-II Atlantic Region,
Nenad Terzic and
Cormac McCooey, outlasted SBU's Victor Blanco and Hector Martinez, 7-6 (7-5),in the No. 1 doubles match to break a 1-1 tie in pairs competition and claim the point for Mercyhurst.
Conor McCooey and
Joaquin Aguilera was the other winning doubles team for Mercyhurst, taking a 6-4 decision against John Rutkowski and Guillermo Garcia at third doubles.
Singles winners for the Lakers were Terzic,
Sebastian Pardo,
Conor McCooey and
Arseniy Sklyarov.
Terzic, who is ranked third in the Atlantic Region, won at No. 1 singles over Martinez, 6-2, 6-2, while Pardo bested Garcia at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Also for the Lakers, Sklyarov won at sixth singles against Hristo Hristov, 6-3, 6-3, while
Conor McCooey moved one win away from the centurk mark with his 6-2, 6-3, triumph over Rutkowski.
