ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to NCAA Division I opponent Niagara on Sunday at the Westwood Racquet Club.
The Lakers won 1 of 3 doubles matches before splitting singles action with the Purple Eagles.
The No. 1 doubles team in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region,
Nenad Terzic and
Conor McCooey, combined for Mercyhurst's only point in doubles play, taking an 8-2 win against Felipe Fuentes and Taylan Ozdemir.
Singles wins were earned for Mercyhurst by
Sebastian Pardo,
Conor McCooey and
Arseniy Sklyarov at fourth, fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
Pardo outlasted Josh Wilson in three sets, 6-0, 1-6, 6-2, while
Conor McCooey won a three-set thriller himself over Brent Doleslav, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Sklyarov's win over Lukas Wenninger went to tiebreaker and finished with a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) decision.
The No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches -- both of which were Niagara wins -- were both tied through two sets. Nadeau edged Mercyhurst's
Joaquin Aguilera, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, at third singles. Then, at second singles, Fuentes finished with a win over
Cormac McCooey due to injury retirement:
Cormac McCooey won the first set, 6-0, before Fuentes took the second, 6-1.
