WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. -- The Mercyhurst men's tennis team won its first match of 2017, taking an 8-1 non-conference decision over Daemen on Sunday.
The Lakers (2-0) won all three doubles matches before taking five of six points during the singles portion.
Joaquin Aguilera and
Nenad Terzic, the No. 4 Atlantic Region doubles squad, were winners in the No. 1 pairs match, edging Daemen's Mark Veitengruber and Justin Milner, 9-8.
The McCooey brothers (No. 6 Atlantic Region) --
Conor McCooey and
Cormac McCooey -- teamed for a Mercyhurst point at second doubles, winning 8-1 over Andrew LeMar and Fabian Wilde. Then, at No. 3 doubles, MU's
Arseniy Sklyarov and
Sebastian Pardo claimed an 8-6 win against David Gonzalez Villegas and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez.
Mercyhurst singles victories were earned by Terzic,
Cormac McCooey,
Conor McCooey, Pardo and Sklyarov.
Terzic, the fourth-ranked ranked player in the Atlantic Region, defeated Gonzalez Villegas, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 singles.
Cormac McCooey was victorious against Wilde, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2 singles;
Conor McCooey won the fourth singles match over Veitengruber, 6-0, 6-4; Pardo bested Milner at fifth singles, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0; and Sklyarov handled LeMar at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-0.
