Baseball Suffers 5-4 Loss to Gannon; Game Two Suspended In Fifth

Box Score ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst baseball team suffered a 5-4 loss to Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Sunday. The Lakers and Golden Knights began a second game, which was suspended with Mercyhurst leading in the fifth inning, 5-0.

Individual game recaps are below.

Game One: Gannon 5, Mercyhurst 4
The host Golden Knights won in walk-off fasion as Jared Wiesen scored from third base on a groundball to Mercyhurst shortstop Cameron Balego. The Lakers had trailed 4-1 before pulling even -- only to have Gannon win in the seventh.

Austin Alonge (double) went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Hank Morrison added a 2-for-4 game for the Lakers. Sabatino DiNardo III homered while Chris Gonzalez and Drew Borowski doubled. Gonzalez also stole a base.

Joe Gnacinski started on the mound for Mercyhurst (23-9, 11-4). He gave up three earned runs (four total) on five hits while totaling five strikeouts, two walks and two hit batsmen. Chris Vallimont was the losing pitcher in relief.

With the Lakers down 2-0 in the third, Daniel Elliott drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit in half.

After Gannon built a 4-1 advantage in its half of the third, the Lakers came back with DiNardo's dinger in the fourth and then two runs in the sixth -- one on a groundout by Brendan Cox and the other on a single by Alonge.
 
The Knights (22-10, 10-5) scored the game-winning run with one out. Wiesen had a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitcher before Matt Oruch's grounder to Balego ended the game.

Nico DiPaolo was the winning pitcher for Gannon, tossing a scoreless seventh. Santiago Mendez was the starting pitcher, allowing three earned runs (four total) on six hits while registering four strikeouts and three walks.


Game Two: Mercyhurst 5, Gannon 0 (suspended - 5th inning)
The Lakers collected four doubles and five stolen bases before snowfall stopped the game in the fifth inning; it will be resumed at a later date.

Hank Morrison was leading the way, going 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and two RBI. Collin Fantaskey is 2-for-3 with two runs, one double and one stolen base.

Alonge has a double and two runs while Gonzalez and Balego also have doubles.

Starting pitcher Matthew Minnick remains in the game, having thrown four shutout innings. He has given up three hits while recording six strikeouts and two walks.

The Lakers scored twice in the third inning -- on RBI doubles by Alonge and Gonzalez -- before tacking on three in the fourth, when Morrison had a two-run single and Elliott smacked an RBI single.
