CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts – The Mercyhurst University women's water polo team dropped a pair of contests Sunday afternoon in Cambridge. The Lakers lost to Fresno Pacific University in a tight game, 8-7, before being defeated by 22nd-ranked Marist, 14-5.
The Lakers were tied at one with Fresno Pacific University at the end of the first period, before taking a one goal deficit into the break, 4-3. Mercyhurst would never generate a lead in the game, as they would trail by one at the end of the third, 7-6, and ultimately, ended up falling short in the final, 8-7.
Annie Blackman,
Becky Insalaco, and
Kennedy Watson each scored two goals apiece,
Katie Appell added one. Blackman also recorded three steals.
Jesse Sworden saved nine shots.
In the late morning contest, the Lakers suffered an early five goal deficit heading into the locker room, 6-1. Mercyhurst would tack on four goals in the second half, but fell to #22 Marist College, 14-5.
Watson led the team with two goals, while
Sarah Hershey,
Meagan Marques, and Insalaco each added a goal. Watson also added two steals and an assist. Sworden had eight saves.
The losses drop the Lakers to 4-6 overall heading into an off weekend. Mercyhurst will resume play Saturday, March 19 at the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington. The Lakers will face-off against the host team at 1:00 p.m. before playing Sonoma State University at 6:20 p.m.
