Oneonta, NY – The Mercyhurst University women's water polo team split a pair of games this Sunday, in the final day at the Hartwick Open. The Lakers fell to Brown in their opening match of the day, 7-5, but came back to defeat St. Francis Brooklyn, 12-7, later in the afternoon.
In game one, Mercyhurst was leading Brown 4-2 at the break.
The Lakers had held the Bears scoreless in the first period and led 2-0, before taking a two goal lead into halftime.
Brown would rally in the second half, scoring five goals in the third period. The Bears defense also held the Lakers without a goal in the frame as they would gain their first lead of the contest, 5-4.
In the fourth, Mercyhurst would only generate one goal as Brown tacked on two more, to take the game, 7-5.
Kennedy Watson led the Lakers in game one, scoring three goals and recorded a team high six steals.
Game two played tight in the first half, with Mercyhurst holding on to a one goal lead, 5-4, at the break.
The Lakers would pull away in the second half, scoring five goals in the third period and posted two more in the fourth, en route to their fourth victory of the season.
Watson again led the team, scoring seven goals and added four steals.
Becky Insalaco also was a key contributor in the win as she scored a goal, dished out an assist and came away with two steals.
Mercyhurst (4-3) will be back in action next weekend, when they travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts for the Harvard Invitational. The Lakers will face-off against the host team on day one, Saturday, March 5, at 9:15 a.m.
