ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University women's water polo team won both games to kick off the 2016 season Saturday at the David M. Hallman III Aquatics Center. The Lakers defeated St. Francis (Brooklyn), 10-7, to begin the day; and then, took down WWPA affiliate California State Monterey Bay, 12-11 in overtime.
The Lakers started strong to start off the day, as they never trailed the Terriers in game one. Mercyhurst held a 7-4 lead after two periods, and went on to add two more goals in the third and one in the fourth, to hold St. Francis by three.
Kennedy Watson and
Becky Insalaco each posted three goals, while Watson also added two assists.
Annie Blackman found the back of the net twice, as well.
Jesse Sworden saved six shots and came away two steals.
In the night cap, Mercyhurst broke a 5-5 tie after two periods, as they led by one, 7-6, heading into the fourth.
The Otters would come away with three goals in the final frame, to tie the game at nine apiece.
Cal State Monterey Bay would answer first in overtime, taking a 10-9 lead – their first lead of the game. The Lakers would score the next three goals and hold on to a one point victory over the Otters.
Watson led the way in game two, scoring four goals, while teammates
Katie Appell and Insalaco each added two. Blackman also recorded a goal and dished out three assists.Mercyhurst will be back in action tomorrow morning at 10:15 a.m. when they take on Siena College, followed by an afternoon contest against Villanova at 3:15 p.m.
