Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team got big contributions from two of their breakout freshmen
Connor Wilkinson and
Jorge Gonzalez in a 2-0 win over Salem International Saturday afternoon at Mercyhurst Soccer Field.
Despite windy conditions, the Lakers offense had no trouble building a lead against the Tigers. In the 19
th minute of the first half, Wilkinson found open space down the right side of the field and sent a low cross into the box. Gonzalez raced down the middle of the field and one-touched the ball into the net to put the Lakers ahead 1-0. The goal was Gonzalez's 11
th of his freshman season.
Later in the 36
th minute, Wilkinson had the ball at his feet in space this time on a breakaway. He beat the Salem keeper Dom Gillespie one-on-one to make it 2-0 Mercyhurst.
In the second half, Mercyhurst threatened on a couple opportunities but didn't finish. Nonetheless, Salem couldn't amount any consistent attacking pressure to create any scoring chances for themselves. The Lakers went on to win 2-0, outshooting the Tigers 13-7 for the match.
Mercyhurst (11-4-1) faces its biggest test of the season next week. The Lakers host Gannon on Tuesday, Oct. 25 in a clash of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titans. Mercyhurst sits atop of the conference standings with Gannon ranked just behind them in second. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
