#8 Men's Lacrosse Upset In Season-Opener At Mount Olive On Saturday

Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, NC – The Trojans of Mount Olive showed no love to the Mercyhurst University 8th-ranked men's lacrosse team Saturday with a 13-9 win on Valentine's Day in the Lakers' 2015 season-opener. Mount Olive improved to 2-0 in the young season.

Junior Spencer Gelinas' goal with 7:42 left to play broke a 9-9 tie and propelled the Trojans to the upset win in the non-conference contest. Sophomore Brett Kingston led the Trojans with four goals, including two in the final four minutes to seal the win.

Mercyhurst trailed 1-0 after a quarter, but rallied with three second period goals to take a 3-2 advantage into intermission. Junior Cory Becker scored his first goal of the season at 14:10 and sophomore James Crowe tallied twice late in the half to erase a 2-1 deficit.

Senior Trevor Vargo made it 4-2 early in the third, the first of 17 second-half goals. Vargo's goal brought a three-goal response from the Trojans before junior Marco Maronski tied the game at 5-5 with 4:22 to play in the third. Vargo's second of the game with 68 seconds left in the third trimmed Mount Olive's lead to 7-6 entering the fourth quarter.

Mount Olive led 9-7 with 10:37 remaining in the contest but Mercyhurst rallied to tie the game after goals by sophomore Keyan McQueen and junior Connor Enright.

But just 62 seconds later, Gelinas put the Trojans ahead to stay with his second goal of the game. Mount Olive kept a one-goal lead until Kingston scored his third goal of the contest with 4:06 left. Alex Tindall and Kingston scored goals 34 seconds apart with less than three minutes remaining to cap the scoring.

Saturday's win was Mount Olive's third in its three-year history over a nationally ranked team. The Trojans defeated nationally ranked Pfeiffer twice last season.

Mercyhurst was penalized four times for a total of three minutes. Mount Olive incurred eight penalties accumulating 6:30.

The Lakers will travel to Vienna, WV, next Saturday to play Ohio Valley University at 1:00 p.m.
