Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, NC – The Trojans of Mount Olive showed no love to the Mercyhurst University 8th-ranked men's lacrosse team Saturday with a 13-9 win on Valentine's Day in the Lakers' 2015 season-opener. Mount Olive improved to 2-0 in the young season.
Junior Spencer Gelinas' goal with 7:42 left to play broke a 9-9 tie and propelled the Trojans to the upset win in the non-conference contest. Sophomore Brett Kingston led the Trojans with four goals, including two in the final four minutes to seal the win.
Mercyhurst trailed 1-0 after a quarter, but rallied with three second period goals to take a 3-2 advantage into intermission. Junior
Cory Becker scored his first goal of the season at 14:10 and sophomore
James Crowe tallied twice late in the half to erase a 2-1 deficit.
Senior
Trevor Vargo made it 4-2 early in the third, the first of 17 second-half goals. Vargo's goal brought a three-goal response from the Trojans before junior
Marco Maronski tied the game at 5-5 with 4:22 to play in the third. Vargo's second of the game with 68 seconds left in the third trimmed Mount Olive's lead to 7-6 entering the fourth quarter.

But just 62 seconds later, Gelinas put the Trojans ahead to stay with his second goal of the game. Mount Olive kept a one-goal lead until Kingston scored his third goal of the contest with 4:06 left. Alex Tindall and Kingston scored goals 34 seconds apart with less than three minutes remaining to cap the scoring.
Saturday's win was Mount Olive's third in its three-year history over a nationally ranked team. The Trojans defeated nationally ranked Pfeiffer twice last season.
Mercyhurst was penalized four times for a total of three minutes. Mount Olive incurred eight penalties accumulating 6:30.
The Lakers will travel to Vienna, WV, next Saturday to play Ohio Valley University at 1:00 p.m.
