Women's Soccer Falls in Tough Battle to East Stroudsburg

ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's soccer team lost another close Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game to East Stroudsburg Saturday afternoon at home, 2-1.

In the first half, East Stroudsburg's Brielyn Hackett put the Warriors on the board first off an assist from Courtney Kellar to the center of the box for an open shot beating goal keeper Ellie McDougall to the bottom right for a 1-0 lead.

Before the half ended, Senior Janine Wong took a free kick in the 40th minute that went off of goal keeper Jules Harris and into the back of the net knotting up the score at one all. It was Wong's second goal off a free kick this season and her third goal overall.

In the second half, the game was played physical as Nikki Charboneau (49:51), Emily Leiby (58:00) and East Stroudsburg's Hannah Gombos (64:12) all received yellow cards.

The Warriors would take a late advantage in the 72nd minute to go up 2-1 when Courtney Keller scored her first goal of the season off a Molly Vicari cross pass to the middle of the box for a open shot beating McDougall.

Mercyhurst was not able to punch in a goal before time ran out as the Warriors stole a win on the road.

East Stroudsburg out-shot the Lakers 12-5 overall in the contest. McDougall, making her first appearance back after missing two games with an injury, had seven saves.

After the loss, the Lakers fall to 2-3-1 overall (2-3-1 PSAC) and the Warriors improved to 4-1-0 (4-1-0 PSAC).

Mercyhurst's next game is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, at Gannon. Kickoff is set for six p.m.
