Men's Soccer Dominates East Stroudsburg, 6-1

ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst men's soccer team put on a dominating performance over East Stroudsburg winning 6-1 for their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win.

After losing a close battle with West Chester yesterday, the Lakers came out to prove their relevance. The Warriors struggled to keep Mercyhurst contained from the opening whistle. The Lakers scored on their third shot of the game at the 13:45 mark off a pass from Uday Arora to Jack Watson for his fifth goal of the season.

Just a minute late, Mercyhurst struck again as senior Fernando Martinez assited Danny Deakin beating the Warriors starting goal keeper, J.B. Pahls, to the bottom right. It was Deakin's fourth goal of the season and Martinez's third assist of the year.
At the 15:24 mark, Richard Vanhorne joined in on the action receiving a pass from the right side from Watson to the middle of the box where he was able to beat the keeper to the bottom left. It was Vanhorne's third goal of the season and Watson's second assist.

The Lakers would add one more goal in the 19th minute of the first half when a rare own goal occurred. A shot from Deakin was saved by Pahls but then fumbled around and found its way into the back of the net.

Mercyhurst would go into the half with a comfortable 4-0 lead.

In the second, Mercyhurst did not let their foot off the gas as they continued to attack scoring their fifth goal of the game in the 52nd minute. Watson received a cross pass from Sten Marcson where he was able to finish for his second goal of the day and sixth on the season.

Two minutes later, at the 54:16 mark, Dane Rimko assisted Patrick Gehring to go up 6-0. It was Gehring's first goal of the season and Rimko's first assist.

East Stroudsburg would get on the board taking away Mercyhurt's goal keeper Nicholas Smith's shutout. The goal came in the 66th minute off a pass from Jonathan Stuppe to Andrew McGinley to make it a score of 6-1.

Mercyhurst ended up out-shooting the Warriors 20-5 in the match. Smith recorded one save and improved his record to 4-1.

Mercyhurst's record after the win is 5-2-0 (1-1-0 PSAC) and East Stroudsburg falls to 1-4-1 (0-2-0 PSAC).

The Lakers next game is scheduled for Thursday, September 25, at home against non-conference opponent University of the District of Columbia. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
