Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio- The #9 Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team won, 18-4, at Walsh Tuesday night.
Chad Levick scored four goals to lead the Lakers to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) victory.
Trevor Vargo opened the game with a goal at the 12:48 mark and then
Brady Heseltine gave the Lakers a 2-0 advantage two minutes later. Vargo followed with another goal and then
Brandon Thomson scored on a man-up chance for a 4-0 lead. Levick capped the first quarter with a goal at the 2:26 mark as Mercyhurst led, 5-0, after fifteen minutes.
Walsh scored to open the second frame, but Mercyhurst responded with four straight goals to close the half. Thomson scored and then
Deven Alves found the back of the net with 6:15 remaining in the quarter. Heseltine and
Jake McAndrew each scored, sending the Lakers into halftime with a 9-1 lead. In the third period, Thomson picked up his third assist of the night, finding Levick for a man-up score 18 seconds into the half. McAndrew hit Heseltine for his third goal of the match before Walsh scored on the other end. Levick answered with a pair of goals to end the third.
The hosts scored twice to start the fourth, but the Lakers came back with five goals to end the contest. Joe Shephard assisted on goals by
James Crowe and
Keyan McQueen.
John Plaskey scored and then McQueen found
Derek Richards for a score and Crowe scored at the 5:37 mark to create the 14-goal margin.
Levick scored a career-high four goals to go with an assist. Thomson posted a pair of goals and a career-high four assists. McAndrew and Shephard dished out three helpers apiece, while Heseltine tallied his 18th career hat trick. McQueen had a goal and an assist and Vargo scored twice.
Michael Grace made six saves in goal.
Benjamin Brooks won 10-11 faceoffs, picking up five ground balls.
Mercyhurst outshot Walsh, 45-20, and collected 31 ground balls to 21 for the hosts. The Lakers won 20-24 faceoffs and converted 5-7 man-up opportunities.
Mercyhurst is now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the ECAC. Walsh dropped to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Lakers host #4 Tampa on Saturday, April 5, at Tullio Field.
