HAYWARD, Calif.- The Mercyhurst women's water polo fell twice Sunday, losing to Sonoma State, 8-7, and Cal State East Bay, 16-6. Both contests were played at Cal State East Bay's Pioneer Pool in Hayward, California.
In the loss to Sonoma, the Lakers took a 3-1 lead after a quarter. They led, 4-3, at halftime, but Sonoma State grabbed a 6-5 edge through three periods and then held on for a one-goal victory.
Cailin Jope led with two goals and two assists.
Jena Clinch scored twice and dished out a helper, while
Aleeyse Utech,
Stephanie Fernandez, and
Meagan Marques had a goal apiece.
Becky Insalaco and
Allie Grimes had two assists each.
Jesse Sworden played the first half in goal, making seven saves.
Rachel Stock posted three saves while playing the second half in net.
Against East Bay, the Lakers trailed, 7-2, at the end of the first and 12-4 at the half. Marques had two goals, Fernandez and Insalaco tallied a goal and an assist apiece, and Clinch registered three helpers. Jope and
Annie Blackman each scored once.
Mercyhurst is now 6-3 this season. It plays at Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday, March 11, to conclude the team's West Coast trip.Â
