GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Mercyhurst University softball team suffered a 10-2 loss against King College (Tenn.) on Saturday afternoon at the Pioneer Classic. The Lakers fell to 0-7 on the early season.

For the first time this season the Lakers were the first to take the lead in the game. The Lakers took the 1-0 lead at the top of the second inning when the senior class stepped up to the plate. Smith put herself on with a single to center field. Next up, senior Courtney Smith laid down a sacrifice bunt which resulted in a domino effect of errors from King's offense. With the combination of the Smith's, Megan Smith crossed the plate and Courtney Smith capitalized by taking third base.

At the bottom of the second however, King strung together six hits which resulted in seven runs. King held the Lakers to any more runs until the top of the fourth with Megan Smith connecting again. This time Smith tallied her first homerun of the season as the lead-off hitter of the inning. Her blast soared over the left center fence.

The Lakers defense held King to an 8-2 lead up until the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, King completed the contest after Walker doubled to center and drove in two RBIs.

Junior Annie Truelove fell to 0-4 on the season after allowing seven earned runs on seven hits and three walks. Senior Colleen Griffin pitched three complete innings, giving up six hits for three runs and collected two strikeouts.

The Lakers face Kutztown on Sunday, February 23 at 9:00 a.m. for the final contest of the Pioneer Classic.
