ASHLAND, Ohio - The fourth-ranked Mercyhurst University wrestling team extended its winning streak to 15 consecutive dual matches on Wednesday night with an impressive 31-7 victory at Ashland University. The Lakers improved to 3-0 in duals this season while it was the Eagles' first dual of the year.
Mercyhurst, which has not lost since January 3, 2014 at San Francisco State, was handed an early 6-0 advantage when redshirt sophomore
Willie Bohince earned a forfeit win at 125 pounds. However, the lead was cut to 6-4 when Ashland's Michael Labry picked up a major decision victory over redshirt senior
Ryan Bohince at 133. The match was a battle of two nationally-ranked wrestlers - Labry entered second in the country while the elder Bohince was eighth.
That would be as close as Ashland would get as the Lakers rattled off six consecutive victories to extend their lead to 27-4 by the time the 197-pound bout started.
Redshirt junior
Kody Young blanked Ashland's Ty Davis, 4-0, in the 141-pound match to give the Lakers a 9-4 advantage. Redshirt junior
Jeremy Landowski followed that up with an impressive 4-0 win over Brent Fickel in the other bout of the night that featured two nationally-ranked competitors (Landowski - 5th, Fickel - 7th).
Mercyhurst picked up bonus points in the next two matches when redshirt sophomore
Francis Mizia won by technical fall at 157 and redshirt junior
Angelo Bortoluzzi was victorious by major decision at 165. Redshirt junior
August Mizia and sophomore
Dakota DesLauriers followed with back-to-back decisions to put the Laker lead at 27-4.
Sophomore
Andrew Welton earned Mercyhurst's last victory of the night with a major decision win in the heavyweight match.
The Lakers will head to Bloomsburg University on Saturday, December 6 to compete in the 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships. Mercyhurst will look to improve upon its fifth-place finish from a year ago.
