#7/8 Women's Hockey Takes Sixth Straight with 5-1 Win at Syracuse Friday

Box Score SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The #7/8 Mercyhurst women's hockey team won, 5-1, at Syracuse Friday night. Five different Lakers scored and Amanda Makela made 28 saves in the College Hockey America (CHA) contest at the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
 
Jenna Dingeldein got the Lakers started right, scoring 2:10 into the first period. Emily Janiga and Sarah Robello assisted on the score.The junior's fourth goal of the season made it 1-0 early. Makela tallied 11 stops to keep Mercyhurst ahead after a frame.
 
In the second period, Megan Whiddon and Jennifer MacAskill set up a Hannah Bale goal. Bale recorded her second goal of the year at the 13:53 mark, giving Mercyhurst a 2-0 advantage. Syracuse answered with a goal late in the period, cutting the margin in half.
 
Janiga expanded the lead with a goal midway through the third period. Janiga's team-high ninth goal of the season came at the 10:53 mark, putting the Lakers back in firm control. Whiddon set up the goal with her second assist of the match.
 
Makela made sure the lead held and then Mercyhurst played add on, scoring twice in the final two minutes. Molly Byrne finished a Jaclyn Arbour assist at the 18:18 mark for a 4-1 lead. After a Laker penalty, the Orange pulled their goalie in the final minute. Shelby Bram took advantage, cashing in on empty-net try with 45 seconds remaining in the match.
 
Mercyhurst held a 30-29 edge in shots and 35-33 margin in faceoffs. The Lakers' penalty kill continued its terrific start to the season, holding Syracuse scoreless on four chances Friday. Mercyhurst has contained opponents to one goal on 42 power play opportunities this year.
 
The Lakers won their sixth straight outing and improved to 9-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the CHA. The Orange dropped to 2-4-5 overall and 1-1-1 in the league. Mercyhurst now holds a 27-0-2 advantage in the all-time series.
 
The teams meet again tomorrow at 3 p.m. to wrap up the weekend series.
