BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon. Senior
Perrin Kern scored her first goal of the season as the Lakers fall to 0-1-1 in the season.
Sophomore goaltender
Ellie McDougall (0-1-1) made six saves in the effort, allowing two goals in 90 minutes played. Bloomsburg goaltender Danielle Fiorelli made five saves and allowed one.
The Lakers were the first to score almost half-way through the first half of the contest as the Lakers received their first corner kick attempt at the 20:10 mark of the first half. With the connection of junior
Janine Wong to Kern, the duo wasted no time as Kern scored with a header to give her team a 1-0 advantage.
With five minutes left in the first, Bloomsburg scored the equalizer when Tara Huber crossed a centering pass to Ashley Sanchez who redirected it passed McDougall. At the end of the first Bloomsburg had the seven to four shot advantage as the Lakers were up in corner kicks three to two.
Bloomsburg had the strong showing in the second offensively but McDougall fired back making a point blank diving save within the first three minutes of the second half. She would continue the strong defense throughout with two more diving saves, help from her goalposts and defensemen.
Despite the back and forth battle, Bloomsburg broke through the Lakers' defense with the luck of a rebounded ball off the corner post. Huskies Tara Huber was able to finish the pass past McDougall to give her team the win at the 81:00 minute of the contest.
The Lakers will head back to the Mercyhurst Soccer Field on Tuesday, September 10 to take on Lake Erie College. Last season, the Lakers traveled to Painesville, Ohio to capture a 2-0 win from the Storm. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m.
