ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst (2-8-0) lost to LIU (1-7-1) with a final score of 2-1 on Sunday at Saxon Stadium. The Lakers withstood six LIU attacks from 79:19 to 86:22 with the score at 1-0, but the late defensive stretch was not enough to prevent the loss.
Jenna Popowski took the Lakers' first shot at :29, and after LIU put two attempts off target, Popowski hit the right woodwork at 5:40 before
Anamari Bosnjak forced a save at 8:03. The Lakers kept creating chances in the middle of the half, with
Caterina Cappiello and
Sadie Lewis putting shots on frame before LIU missed a penalty kick at 24:00. Popowski had another shot saved at 27:59, and a foul-heavy stretch followed before LIU earned two late corner kicks in the final two minutes. Neither side broke through, leaving the first half scoreless.
The Lakers generated the first chance of the second half when Popowski's shot was saved at 45:35, and after LIU put together several attempts, Mercyhurst earned a corner at before
Camryn Klein scored with her first goal of the season at 57:11 for a 1-0 lead. LIU pressed through the middle and late stages, with
Alyssa Alcorn saving shots while the Lakers also forced saves on attempts by Popowski and Cappiello. After Alcorn stopped a shot at 86:22, LIU scored at 86:24 to bring LIU level at 1-1, and LIU scored again off an assist at 89:00 to give LIU a 2-1 final.
Klein scored an unassisted goal on her only shot. Popowski led the Lakers with five shots and put three on goal. Cappiello placed all three of her shots on frame. Alcorn made five saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal.
