Women's Soccer Defeats Chicago State with a 3-1 Win

ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst (2-7-0) defeated Chicago State (0-8-0) with a score of 3-1 on Thursday. The Lakers finished with a 13-6 shot advantage, including 8-5 in shots on goal.
 
The Lakers created the first chances of the first half, with Jenna Popowski shooting wide at 3:09 and Julia Bullock hitting the right post at 8:45 before Alyssa Alcorn saved a Chicago State attempt at 9:43. The Lakers followed with a corner and an Isabella Fiorillo shot over the goal, while Alcorn stopped another Chicago State shot at before Caterina Cappiello put an attempt on frame and the Lakers earned another corner. Chicago State kept the match scoreless with saves on Bullock at 21:36 and Popowski at 42:06, but Popowski scored off Bullock's assist at 43:59 to send the Lakers into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
 
The Lakers created the first sustained push of the second half at 50:34, when Sadie Lewis had a shot saved by Chicago State's goalkeeper, the Lakers earned a corner kick and Popowski sent a follow-up shot wide. Anamari Bosnjak converted a penalty kick at 56:37 to extend the Lakers' lead to 2-0, and Alcorn kept that margin intact with a save in the 65th minute. Chicago State cut the deficit to 2-1 on a penalty kick at 72:06, but Lena Rudy scored at 75:05 to restore a two-goal lead for the Lakers. Amely Molina put another shot on frame in the 79th minute, and Alcorn added a save before the Lakers finished off the 3-1 win.
 
Popowski scored and led the Lakers with four shots, including two on goal. Bosnjak recorded the game-winning goal and finished with two shots. Rudy scored on her only shot attempt. Alcorn made four saves over 90 minutes in goal.

The Lakers will return to action at home on Sunday at 2 p.m. as they take on LIU during Mercyhurst's homecoming weekend.
