ERIE, Pa. – Freshman
Linnea Laitinen of the Mercyhurst women's soccer team scored her first collegiate goal in her first appearence as a Laker in the 74:01 minute of Thursday's match to send her team into overtime with Lock Haven University. After double-overtime the Lakers tied their first match of the season 1-1 to start their season with a record of 0-0-1.
The first half of the contest remained scoreless after 45 minutes of play. Throughout the first, the Lakers outshot Lock Haven 12 to one, with four shots on goal.
Lock Haven's Rhiannon Miller tallied her first goal of the season 13 minutes after the start of the second period. Miller shot her unassisted goal after chipping the ball over sophomore goaltending
Ellie McDougall to give her team the one goal advantage on her first shot.
Mercyhurst had outshot Lock Haven ten to two throughout the second half, but it was Laitinen who broke through the barrier of the Lock Haven defense and goaltender Dana Wozniak. Junior
Kiley Cleveland battled at the top left hand side of the penalty box until Laitinen made herself available for an open pass. Laitinen would then take one touch before passing the ball into the left hand corner of the net.
Regulation time would expire as well as two overtime scoreless periods to end the contest in a tie. Overall Mercyhurst had a strong showing after outshooting Lock Haven 27 to 4, with 14 of them finding their way to the net.
McDougall made two saves and allowed one to make her way to 0-0-1 at the start of the season. Wozniak made a total of 13 saves to also start the season 0-0-1.
The Lakers travel to Bloomsburg on Saturday, September 7 to continue on their PSAC competition. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
