Popowski’s Goal Earns the Lakers Their First Win of the Season Over RMU

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Mercyhurst University (1-3-0) secured a 1-0 victory over Robert Morris University (1-3-0) on Thursday at the North Athletic Complex. This marks Mercyhurst's first win of the season and their first victory over a Division I non-conference opponent since 2024. The Lakers' lone goal came from Jenna Popowski in the second half, while their defense held Robert Morris scoreless with four saves.
 
The first period began with both teams displaying strong defensive efforts. Robert Morris's Morgan Gesinski tested the Lakers' goalkeeper, Adri Lika, with two consecutive shots in the 11th minute, both saved. The Lakers responded with a corner kick in the 19th minute, followed by a shot from Molly Taylor at 21:52, which was saved by Robert Morris's goalkeeper. Despite several scoring opportunities, including a shot by Gabrielle Garcia, neither team managed to break the deadlock, ending the period scoreless.
 
The Lakers secured a narrow victory over Robert Morris with a decisive goal in the second period. Jenna Popowski found the back of the net in the 79th minute, assisted by Gabrielle Garcia and Caterina Cappiello, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Despite multiple attempts, Robert Morris couldn't equalize, as the Lakers' defense held firm to maintain the lead until the final whistle.
 
Popowski notched the game-winning goal and led the Lakers with five shots, including two on goal. Lika secured a shutout by making four saves over 90 minutes. Cappiello and Garcia both contributed assists to bolster the team's offensive efforts.
