MANKATO, Minn. – Early scoring, and last minute defense propelled the eighth-ranked Mercyhurst University women's hockey team toa 3-2 win over Minnesota State- Mankato 3-2 Saturday afternoon. Mercyhurst improved to 1-1-0 in the season as the team's split the weekend series.
Sophomore
Jenna Dingeldein gave the Lakers a 1-0 edge with her first goal of the season. The power-play goal was scored at the 7:03 mark of the first period with help from senior
Christine Bestland and freshman
Jillian Skinner.
Dingeldein struck again just over a minute later. Bestland again set her up Dingeldein with the second assist going to junior
Shelby Bram. Mercyhurst headed into the first intermission with a 2-0 advantage. The Lakers had a nine to seven advantage in shots.
Sophomore
Maggie Rothgery extended the lead 3-0 after scoring her second career goal at the 15:52 mark of the second period. The only goal of the period was assisted by sophomore
Jaclyn Arbour and freshman
Taylor Accursi.
Minnesota State – Mankato didn't quit and lit the lamp twice within a 40-second span midway in the third. Kathleen Rogan scored a power-play goal, her second of the weekend, at the 8:38.
Nicole Germaine scored less than a minute later and the lead was down to one. The Mavericks pulled the goalie with 1:18 left in the contest, but the Mercyhurst defense withstood the extra attacker.
Mercyhurst junior
Amanda Makela (1-1) allowed two goals on 23 shots. The Mavericks counterpart Danielle Butters suffered the loss, allowing three goals in 35 shots faced.
All told, the Lakers outshot the Mavericks 35 to 23. Mercyhurst's Chrisite Cicero led the team with eight shots on net, junior
Molly Byrne and Bestland both tallied seven.
Bestland had a goal and two assists in the two-game series. Dingeldein tallied two goals, while Bram assisted three times.
The Lakers will host Ohio State on Saturday, October 5 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The contest, part of homecoming, will begin at 7:00 p.m.
