ERIE, Pa. - Mercyhurst senior lefthander Ben Rawding threw one hit ball for seven innings as the Mercyhurst University baseball team improved to 7-7 with a 4-0 win over Salem International on Saturday afternoon. The game was moved from Salem (WVa) because of poor field conditions. Salem dropped to 2-8.

Rawding struck out eleven, walked one (first inning) and allowed only a second inning single. The Lakers gave him the only run he needed in the bottom of the second when they used two hits and a Salem error to score an unearned marker.

Sophomore catcher Jake Marinelli singled home a run in the third, an inning in which the Lakers left the sacks loaded.

Mercyhurst then closed the scoring in the sixth when junior leftfielder Anthony Tomasone stroked a two-run double.

Rawding left after the seventh. Freshman Cam Knott and junior Adam Curyto tossed a scoreless inning apiece and combined for three strikeouts.

Sophomore designated hitter Kyle Hagerich led the Lakers with three hits while freshmen Joel Yeagley, Brendan Cox, and Hank Morrison had two hits apiece.  Four of Mercyhurst's 12 hits were doubles.

Rawding improved to 4-0 on the young season, increasing his PSAC record to 16 consecutive decisions with a victory. Chance Sharp pitched 6.1 innings for Salem, giving up ten hits and all four runs, three earned.

Mercyhurst and Salem will play a doubleheader Sunday at Pullman Park in Butler, Pa. The first game is due to start at 12:30.
