Complete Daktronics All-Region Team
WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Senior placekicker
Steven Wakefield was the lone representative from the Mercyhurst University football team named to the 2013 Daktronics All-Super Region 1 Football Team as announced on Thursday morning. The teams were voted on by the region's sports information directors.
Wakefield was named to the Daktronics All-Super Region 1 First Team as the region's placekicker. Last season, he earned Second Team honors at punter. Wakefield and the other players selected to the First Team will now be placed on the Daktronics, Inc. All-America ballot, the results of which will be announced later this month.
Hailing from Rochester, New York, Wakefield broke nearly every school kicking record at Mercyhurst during his four-year career. He was named an All-PSAC West First Team selection last month for the first time in his career.
This season, Wakefield was 16-of-17 on field goals and 41-of-42 on extra points, finishing with a career-high, and a school-record 89 points. His 16 field goals shattered the previous record of 11 which was held by Vinny Repucci in 2002, and his career mark of 38 field goals hammered the previous mark of 23, which was held by Phil Scanlon from 2003-06.
Named to the All-PSAC Second Team at both punter and kicker in 2012, Wakefield's accuracy in 2013 helped Mercyhurst have the best red zone offense in the conference (43-of-45 - .956) and the second-highest percentage in the country. He had three games in which he booted three field goals and made his final 12 field goal attempts of the season.
Wakefield now holds the school's all-time records for most career extra points made (164), most career field goals made (38), most field goals in a season (16), most points in a season (89), most career points by a kicker (278), and most points scored by any player (278).
The teams are sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition.
