JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University women's soccer team picked up their second shutout of the season in the 4-0 win over the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Lakers improved to 5-5-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the PSAC.
The contest remained scoreless until there were five minutes remaining in the first half. Freshman
Nicole McAlpin crossed the ball for sophomore
Lauren Testa to pick up her sixth goal of the season.
Testa tallied her second goal of the contest just three minutes into the second half. The Lakers were awarded a free kick in front of Pitt-Johnstown's net and Testa used her power to drill the ball past goaltender Timi Shiock.
At the 71:42 mark, junior
Emily Leiby extended the lead by three goals when she took advantage of a rebound. Junior
Janine Wong was awarded the assist after she drilled the ball to the top of the net, where it just missed going in and instead hit the cross bar. Leiby waited and capitalized on the rebound to add her second goal of the season.
Just four minutes later, Pitt-Johnstown's defense scored on their own net from an offensive Mercyhurst rush to give the Lakers the 4-0 victory.
Mercyhurst outshot the Mountain Cats 24 to 13 throughout the entire contest. Sophomore
Ellie McDougall picked up her second shutout of the season, and fifth of her career after making three saves.
With the two goals, Testa matched her season-high in goals and points in a contest. The last time Testa scored two goals in a game was against nationally ranked opponent Gannon University.
The Lakers host Seton Hill University on Saturday, October 12 at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
