PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite a season high 49 shots on net, the tenth-ranked Mercyhurst University women's hockey team fell to Providence College, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 2-3-0 in the regular season and are 2-2 on the road. Providence College picked up its first home win of the season and improved to 2-2-0.

The Friars took and Lakers were scoreless tie after one period of play. The Lakers outshot Providence by a 13 to 12 margin, with senior Christie Cicero and junior Shelby Bram attempting three shots apiece in the first twenty minutes.

The duo finally broke through goaltender Sarah Bryant at almost the halfway mark of the second period. Cicero started the play by taking a hard shot at Bryant who left a rebound for Bram. Bram buried the puck into the back of the net. It was her second goal of the season and came at the 9:03 mark of the middle period.

Providence scored the equalizer at the 12:44 mark of the second period when Corrinne Buie used a Laker defenseman as a screen and fired one behind Lakers' goaltender Amanda Makela. Buie's shot found the top right corner of the net after Rebecca Morse and Lexi Slattery created the one-on-one opportunity in the Friars offensive end.

Just 17 seconds into the third period, the Friars' Janine Weber tallied the go ahead goal, deflecting the puck past Makela with help from Buie. Providence extended the lead to 3-1 when Haley Frade scored her first goal of the season on a Friars' power-play at the 15:11 mark.

Cicero narrowed the lead to 3-2  when junior Molly Byrne and senior Christine Bestland set her up with outlet passes. Cicero used her speed to skate past a Friars' defenseman and lifted the puck over Bryant to the top left corner of the net.

Mercyhurst pulled Makela with 40 seconds remaining in regulation but couldn't manufacture the tying goal.

Mercyhurst recorded 25 shots in the third period, including 13 on power-play opportunities, but could not pull out the victory. The Lakers were one for six on the power-play. Providence had one power-play goal in six opportunities.

Of the 49 shots taken by Mercyhurst, Cicero totaled a career high of 13. The last time Mercyhurst attempted 45 or more shots was against Penn State on February 2, 2013, when the Lakers took 50 shots in the game.

Bestland extended her scoring streak to eleven games, matching her career high set in her sophomore season. Bestland is also 19 points away from reaching 200 points.

Bram extended her scoring streak to five games with a pair of goals in the weekend series. She now has six points on the season.

Makela made 20 saves in the loss as her record dropped to 2-3-0. Bryant improved to 2-1-0, making 47 saves.
