Box Score - Game Two
ERIE, Pa. - Senior righthander
Eric Aschley tossed a one-hit shutout in game one and senior
Ethan Santora went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in during game two, as the Mercyhurst baseball team swept Lock Haven University by the scores of 3-0 and 2-1 in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The sweep moved Mercyhurst to 24-8 overall and 7-3 in conference play. Lock Haven fell to 10-20-1 overall and 5-9 in PSAC action.
Aschley allowed just a two-out single to Lock Haven's second baseman Jose Diaz in the second inning in his first start since giving up nine runs in one-third of an inning last Friday at IUP. The senior from Callery, Pa. was in complete control for the entire game, allowing two walks while striking out eight for his second shutout of the season. He improved to 4-3 on the year.
Freshman
Kyle Hagerich gave Aschley all the offense he would need in the bottom of the second inning off of Lock Haven starter David Masteller, launching his first collegiate homerun over the left field fence for a 1-0 Mercyhurst lead. Senior
Shane Latshaw would follow suit with one out in the third inning, also sending a pitch over the left field fence, extending the Mercyhurst lead to 2-0. It was Latshaw's team-leading fifth home run of the season.
Mercyhurst would add its final run of the game in the fourth inning. Back-to-back one-out singles by freshman
Ryan Siegel and sophomore
Anthony Tomasone got the rally started. Siegel would advance to third on a wild pitch and then would score on a deep fly to right field by Latshaw.
Masteller suffered the tough luck loss in game one. He scattered eight Mercyhurst hits over six innings and did not walk a batter while striking out six.
Tomasone had two of the Lakers' hits.
Game two was much of the same - a low-scoring, face-paced contest. Junior
Ben Rawding pitched a complete-game five-hitter to improve to 6-0 on the season. He walked one and struck out nine in his third complete game of the season.
Santora and Siegel provided the damage at the plate for Mercyhurst, combining for all the offense the junior southpaw would need. Siegel would draw a walk to lead off the Lakers' first inning and would advance on a sacrifice bunt by Tomasone. After Latshaw struck out, Santora grounded a ball through the hole between short and third to drive home Siegel for a 1-0 lead.
The Bald Eagles would plate their only run of the afternoon in the top of the third inning off of Rawding. Dakota Roof led off the inning with a single and then would eventually score on a wild pitch, tying the game at 1-1.
But, the Lakers would reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the third inning. Siegel led of the inning with an infield single and then would steal his ninth base of the season to get into scoring position. Then, with two outs, Santora laced a single to center, again driving home Siegel for a 2-1 lead.
Rawding would do the rest, allowing just two baserunners over the final four innings to secure the victory.
Brandon Renoll suffered the loss, allowing five Mercyhurst hits and a walk. He struck out two.
Santora and Siegel combined for all five of Mercyhurst's hits, with Santora going 3-for-3 and Siegel going 2-for-2. The rest of the team went 0-for-16 in the contest.
The Lakers will return to action on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader at Lock Haven. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
