ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University softball team continued its winning ways today, April 5 as they swept the Arrows of Ursuline College, 8-2 and 10-0 respectively.  The Lakers have now won four straight games and hold a perfect 6-0 record at home.

On the season the Lakers now move to 21-16 with a 4-4 PSAC West showing.  Ursuline drops to 8-14 after suffering the sweep.

Freshman Annie Truelove continues her hot streak as she pitched her second straight complete game shutout this week.  The Columbus, Ohio native carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before she gave up her first hit to Ursuline.  Truelove only allowed two hits in seven innings of work while striking out three and walking four.  Her record improves to 7-8 on the season.

Although Truelove didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, the Arrows took the early 1-0 lead after an error sent the first run of the game across the dish in the top of the first inning.  Mercyhurst managed to score a run in the third inning to knot things up when senior Samantha Eimers doubled off the fence in right field sending senior Andrea Sauers home from second.  Sauers reached base on an error and was advanced into scoring position by a sac bunt from junior Molly McNamara.

Senior Emily Redig came through for the Lakers in the fourth inning.  Redig singled allowing senior Jen Bower to touch home plate.  Redig crossed home one batter later when sophomore Megan Smith doubled to left field.  Not to be out done, junior Amanda Walker registered a double of her own sending the ball into the left center field gap.  Walker's double scored Smith from second putting the Lakers on top, 4-1 at the end of the inning.

In the fifth inning the Lakers offense exploded for four runs on five hits.  Eimers doubled to center field to start the inning and then was sent to third on a sacrifice bunt by McNamara.  Freshman Shaina Bunker roped a double into right field easily scoring Eimers from second.  Redig chalked up her second and third RBI's of the game when she sent a laser over the center fielders head for a one out double.  With a runner on second, Smith singled through the right side allowing Redig to cross the dish safely.

Ursuline tried to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth and managed one run but the Lakers defense proved to be to strong as game one would conclude with the Lakers on top, 8-2.

Mercyhurst scored in just one inning during game two but provided plenty of runs for senior pitcher, Kristi Janoske to pick up her seventh win of the season.

In the bottom of the second inning the Lakers registered 10 runs on seven hits while sending 14 batters to the plate.  The inning was led off by a towering home run that was sent over the left field fence by Smith.  She would also walk later in the inning leading to her second run scored during the frame.  The Lakers catcher, Bower, doubled and singled in the inning scoring twice while tallying two RBI's.  Sauers singled in her first at bat before sending a line drive over the right fielders head for a three run, base clearing double.  Senior Sydney Cuscino also stepped to the plate twice in the inning and was hit by the pitch in both at bats.  Cuscino scored in both instances.  Also contributing during the rally was Eimers who singled sending one run across home and Redig who singled up the middle driving in two.

From there Janoske took control pitching four solid innings allowing just two hits to the Arrows lineup.  Freshman Cherise Gunnell pitched the fifth and final inning, not allowing a hit or run to close out the game for the Lakers.  On the season, Janoske holds a 7-3 record.

Mercyhurst carries their four-game win streak into Kutztown University on Saturday, April 7.  The No.5 Golden Bears are currently 32-1 on the season with a 24-game win streak.  Game time is currently scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.  Kutztown will be providing live stats if you are unable to attend, click here
